Happy Hour: Blood Orange Margaritas

Friday, May 2, 2014

I absolutely love margaritas. I love the bite of fresh lime and the instant firey heat from the tequila as it hits your system. It's a cocktail I drink rarely, but when I do I simply go for it. Just in time for Cinco De Mayo, here's a margarita recipe to knock you on your butt.

Mint Love Social Club routinely shares scrumptious-looking cocktails. I was inspired by her blood orange margarita recipe a few weeks ago. Blood oranges are in season from December to March and I knew I would have one last hurrah before they disappeared. I grabbed a few and will share my second blood orange recipe on Monday!

One thing I do NOT like about margaritas - unnecessary sweetness. I want sharp citrus, tequila, and ice. Natalie's recipe included agave nectar, but I completely dropped it. My mix was 4 ounces tequila (I made two drinks!), juice of one huge blood orange (about a full cup), and an ounce of triple sec.

These were sharp and citrusy and packed a serious punch. Plus, you cannot beat that perfect sunset orange color! Of course I'm now inspired to make other fresh fruit margarita varieties this summer - any suggestions of your favorite fruits?

These were sharp and citrusy and packed a serious punch. These were STRONG and all I needed was the one (J enjoyed the other). Plus, you cannot beat that perfect sunset orange color! 1. Bloody Marias are EXCELLENT. Highly recommended. Also popping by to say that I cut the fruit juice in a lot of cocktails by adding a few splashes of club soda/seltzer. I made some stellar "skinny" margaritas using the lime Le Croix seltzer. They have all sorts of flavors that don't have any sugar and are perrrrfect for drink mixing. I tend to get a headache due to the alcohol/sugar mix, and this way you have more juice to make additional cocktails (if you have more than 2 people or had a particularly awful day at work). Of course, this only works if you like bubbles. Which I do. Because bubbles are awesome.

    1. Bubbles are a way of life to which I boldly ascribe.

You can be sweet or spicy, but no sour grapes.
